Purpose of the event

The aim of the events are to:

  • Hear directly from central government their vision of the changing role of scrutiny within public service delivery
  • Explore the breadth of accountability within the public sector and how different organisations are tackling the challenges everyone faces
  • Explore how public empowerment is becoming central to scrutiny and accountability across local government and the health service
  • Build understanding of Local Involvement Networks and how their potential can be fully realised in bringing issues of health, social care and public involvement together
  • Celebrate the achievements of scrutineers across the public sector through the Good Scrutiny Awards
  • Utilise innovative learning techniques to enhance the way scrutiny is done across the public sector and explore ways of engaging with wider audiences.
  • Explore some of the ideas the Department for Communities and Local Government are likely to cover in the Empowerment White Paper, which will be published this summer.
  • Look at the impact of the Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Act and the Police and Justice Act and assess how scrutiny will be affected in the future
  • Discuss how you can use scrutiny within your organisation to improve local public service performance
  • Explore how mechanisms such as Councillor Call for Action and Local Involvement Networks will impact on scrutineers and service providers?
  • Learn what the evidence from health scrutiny tells us about its potential to enhance accountability and partnerships?
  • Explore ways in which partnerships can be built and managed when scrutinisng the Local Area Agreement.
  • Discuss whether relationships across the public sector are likely to be tested or enhanced by a greater role for scrutiny
