Purpose of the 2009 Conference

Day One: (Annual Conference)

The Centre for Public Scrutiny’s 7th annual conference will focus on the ‘critical friend’ – the important role of the non-executive lay person in challenging public service providers and powerful decision-makers across the public sector. It will cover the important topical issues of the day in particular the need to ensure scrutiny contributes to the drive to find efficiencies and help communities deal with the economic downturn. The conference will also debate the on-going drive to place citizens’ rights at the heart of public sector accountability.

Day Two: (Officer and Member programmes)

The Officer Development Day will focus on new and effective ways of working with executives, partners and the public to increase scrutiny’s effectiveness.  Running parallel to this will be the Member Development Day which offers Chairs and Vice Chairs of Scrutiny a full day’s Leadership Academy Training which will enable delegates to analyse the challenges and potential of scrutiny leadership, understand their own leadership styles, develop influencing strategies within the council and local community and assess how they can add value to their organisations through overview and scrutiny.

CfPS 2009: a critical friend for critical times

  • CfPS 2009 will explore the latest developments in overview, scrutiny and public accountability and will be relevant for anyone interested in delivering excellence in public services. The plenary sessions will examine the broad issues of public scrutiny facing all those involved in delivering services across the public sector. The workshops, run in association with partner organisations, will look more closely at the practical issues – to share and learn from existing good practice.
  • CfPS 2009 will offer more opportunities to network.  With a message board service, refreshments breaks and lunch there will be plenty of opportunities to catch up with colleagues facing similar scrutiny challenges.  For the first time, this year’s conference will also be hosting a gala dinner for delegates where you can network with colleagues in more relaxed surroundings.
